Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized that the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) must sustain its recent momentum to remain a robust and profitable state entity.
The Chief Adviser made the remarks at the State Guest House Jamuna while receiving a cheque for Tk 203.47 crore from BSC. The amount includes loan repayments for ship-purchase projects and the government’s share of dividends for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
"BSC has emerged as a profitable organization, and this momentum must be maintained," Prof. Yunus said. He urged the corporation to plan strategically so that income can be reinvested into fleet expansion, which in turn creates employment for seafarers. He also stressed the importance of retaining top-tier instructors at marine academies to produce world-class sailors.
BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek reported that the corporation recently earned its highest-ever revenue, generating nearly Tk 800 crore with a record profit of Tk 306.56 crore in the last fiscal year.
The fleet expansion is already underway. Following the Chief Adviser’s directives, BSC recently added the bulk carrier Banglar Pragati to its fleet, with a second vessel, Banglar Nobojatra, expected on January 30.
Plans are also in motion to acquire several more tankers and bulk carriers from China and through self-financing to further bolster the national flag carrier’s international presence.
