A leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP) narrowly escaped injury Thursday after being shot at during a brazen daylight motorcycle theft in Gazipur’s Mogarkhal area.
Habib Chowdhury, a member of the NCP’s Gazipur city committee, had advertised his motorcycle for sale on Facebook. According to police, two individuals contacting him via an account named "Mafia Aziz" met Chowdhury around noon to inspect the vehicle.
After examining the motorcycle for an hour, the suspects reportedly took the vehicle for a "test drive" on a deserted road. When Chowdhury became suspicious, one of the men pulled a firearm and fired at him.
"One of them fired at me while the other sped off," Chowdhury said. "Fortunately, the bullet did not hit me. I am now taking legal action."
Police recovered a bullet shell at the scene. The suspects fled toward Narayanganj via the Bhogra bypass.
Ali Naser Khan, NCP’s Northern Joint Chief Coordinator, characterized the attack as a "planned trap" targeting activists of the July movement. He condemned the lapse in state security for those involved in the recent mass uprising and demanded the arrests of the perpetrators within 12 hours.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harunur Rashid of Basan Police Station confirmed that an operation is underway to identify the suspects. "We are aware of the incident and will take strict legal action once a formal complaint is filed," Rashid stated.
Senior officials from the Gazipur Metropolitan Police and the Crime Division have visited the site to collect evidence.
