A gold trader from the city’s Hazari Gali area was held at gunpoint and robbed of approximately 42 bhori of gold, valued at an estimated Tk 85 lakh. The perpetrators reportedly used a fake Detective Branch (DB) police identity to intercept and kidnap the businessman.
According to initial reports, the gang began tracking the trader’s movements from the Andarkilla intersection. As the businessman reached Hillview Road No. 2, the suspects—disguised as DB officers—stopped him. They then took him hostage at gunpoint and fled with the gold.
Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Karim confirmed the robbery, stating that an on-site investigation is underway. "We are conducting raids to identify and apprehend those involved," Karim said. Police have withheld the businessman’s identity for security reasons.
Local residents expressed concern that an organized criminal group based in Chattogram may be behind the targeted strike. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and tracking the suspects’ escape route.
