7 Fishermen Sentenced to Jail for Illegal Hilsa Fishing in Sadarpur

Seven fishermen have been sentenced to jail in Sadarpur, Faridpur for illegally catching hilsa during the government-imposed ban. The arrests took place in the early hours of Tuesday night on the Padma River.

A mobile court led by Executive Magistrate and Sadarpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jakia Sultana sentenced the fishermen to 15 days of imprisonment without labor under Section 5(1) of the Fish Protection and Conservation Act, 1950.

Following the court proceedings, the convicted fishermen were handed over to Sadarpur police custody.

During the operation, authorities also seized 5,000 meters of illegal current nets, which were later burned at the riverbank as per standard procedure.

Officials reiterated that strict monitoring will continue to protect the hilsa population during the breeding season.
