A discussion meeting was held in Paikgacha, Khulna, on Saturday to identify key problems affecting the upazila and discuss possible measures for sustainable development.
The meeting was held at the Officers Club auditorium on the morning of September 26. The event was organised by the development organisation LEADERS with support from INKOTA.
The meeting was chaired by Paikgacha Upazila BNP Convener Dr Abdul Majid and moderated by LEADERS Project Coordinator Sharmin Ara Lina.
Special guests included Paikgacha Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Saidur Rahman, Municipal BNP President Aslam Parvez, Upazila Jamaat Secretary Maulana Altaf Hossain, former acting general secretary of Upazila BNP Tushar Kanti Mondal, BNP leader Selim Reza Lucky, acting chairman of Laskar Union Parishad Jahangir Alam Sana, acting chairman of Soladana Union Parishad Piyush Kanti Mondal, and Union Parishad members Rafiqul Islam, Asma Begum, Dilip Mondal, Abdullah Al Mamun, Shekhar Chandra Dhali and TM Hasanuzzaman.
LEADERS Project Officer Ismat Ara Khatun, SM Afzal Hossain, FF Nasrin Akter, Alamgir Hossain, Russell, members of the media and beneficiaries were also present.
Speakers highlighted a number of public-interest issues linked to the effects of climate change. These included the construction of sustainable embankments, prevention of river erosion, excavation of rivers and government-owned canals, and resolving the shortage of safe drinking water.
They called for coordinated initiatives to address the problems and urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure sustainable development in the area.
