Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained between 280 and 300 people during a raid on the headquarters of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) at GPO Mor in Gulistan on Saturday.
Police said some of those detained were leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned.
The raid was conducted at around 2:30pm on Saturday (September 26) based on confidential information about a meeting being held at the Jasad office.
Harun ar Rashid, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Motijheel division, said police conducted the operation after receiving information that a meeting was taking place at the office.
He said police were screening the detainees to determine whether any were associated with the banned Awami League.
“Some 280–300 people from the banned Awami League have been detained. Legal action will be taken against them after verification,” he said.
When asked whether Jasad had permission to hold its workers’ conference, DC Harun ar Rashid did not give a direct answer.
Police said the identities and affiliations of those detained would be verified before deciding on further legal action.
