Police recovered the body of an unidentified man, believed to be around 35 years old, from Sreemati Canal in Patiya, Chattogram, on Friday (September 25).
The body was recovered from the Tegarpuni area of Ward No. 1 in Chanhara Union under Patiya Police Station at around 11am. It was later sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Police believe the body may have drifted into the area two or three days earlier.
According to locals and police, residents spotted the body of a young man floating on tree roots in the canal after the water level dropped at around 7am. They informed police, who arrived at the scene around 8am and brought the body ashore.
After an inquest, the body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy at around 11am.
An unidentified body was also recovered from the same area four months ago, but its identity could not be established at the time.
Patiya Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Juyuts Yas Chakma said the body may have drifted to the area two or three days earlier. No visible injury marks were found on the body, he said, adding that it had been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Patiya Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Khaleq said the unidentified man was approximately 35 years old and was wearing a black vest. A flashlight and a pair of pliers were also recovered from the scene.
Police are trying to identify the man. Initially, they suspect he may have been a security guard or an employee of a decoration shop.
Jahedul Haque, a member of Chanhara Union Parishad, said another body had been found in the area four months ago. As the location is relatively isolated, he said it should be investigated whether any criminal activity is taking place there.
