The tiny island nation of Cape Verde is buzzing with excitement as the Blue Sharks prepare for their historic first-ever World Cup appearance.

Cape Verde a tiny volcanic archipelago of just 525,000 people is gearing up for its first-ever World Cup appearance. As one of the smallest nations to ever qualify for the tournament and the historic achievement has sparked a wave of joy and renewed ambition across the country.

At the Bola pra Frente football school in the capital city of Praia, the excitement is palpable. Young players train energetically, inspired by a national squad that includes several of the academy's alumni.

"We are a small country, but the dream is big," said Silveria "Nita" Nedio, the school’s president and coach of the national women's team. She hopes that during the tournament, Cape Verde will be viewed with the same respect as traditional football giants.

The success of the national team, known as the "Blue Sharks," has led to a surge in football academy enrollments. At another renowned school, Escola de Preparacao Integral de Futebol (EPIF), coach Odair Rodrigues views the qualification as the realization of a national dream. "My mission is to keep fueling this enthusiasm among young people," he said, noting the academy's goal to integrate children from poorer neighborhoods.

For the younger generation, the milestone is deeply personal. Sixteen-year-old Luciano Correia described it as a moment of "indescribable joy," noting that his parents and grandparents had never seen the country reach a World Cup.

The Blue Sharks face a challenging group stage. They will play European champions Spain in their opening match on June 15, followed by two-time World Cup winners Uruguay on June 22, and Saudi Arabia on June 27. Despite the tough draw, fans and players remain optimistic. "Win or lose, it will have been a good experience," Correia added.

Ahead of their departure, the team completed an island tour, drawing massive crowds for celebratory concerts and fan meet-and-greets. National team coach Pedro Leitao Brito noted that the squad serves as a proud reflection of the Cape Verdean people.

Captain Ryan Mendes a 16-year veteran of the squad, hopes this World Cup run will open doors for local youth. While the country possesses immense natural talent, resources for training remain scarce. Across Praia, it is common to see locals playing barefoot on Gamboa Beach, using tires to mark the goals.

Yet, the passion for the sport remains unmatched. "For us, football is like cachupa [the national dish]," said local player Jorge Pina. "Football morning, noon, and night. Cape Verde is all about football."
