Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter, the prime accused in the rape and murder of child Ramisa Akhter in Dhaka’s Pallabi, were produced before a court on Monday.
The accused were brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court premises in a prison van around 7:45 AM and kept in lockup. The Dhaka Child Violence Prevention Tribunal is scheduled to hold the charge-framing hearing today in their presence.
According to the case files, on May 19, seven-year-old Ramisa left her home around 9:30 AM. Accused Sohel Rana lured her into a room on the third floor of the building. An hour later, Ramisa's mother went looking for her as it was time for school. Spotting her daughter’s shoes outside the accused's door, she called out. Receiving no response, she entered the flat with neighbors and discovered Ramisa’s decapitated body inside a bucket in the bedroom. Swapna Akhter was found standing nearby.
Following the incident, the victim's father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, filed a murder case with Pallabi Police Station naming the couple. Police initially arrested Swapna, and later tracked down and arrested Sohel Rana from Fatullah in Narayanganj. On May 20, Sohel Rana confessed to the crime in court, after which the court sent both suspects to prison pending trial.
