Erling Haaland has etched his name deeper into football history following Manchester City’s dramatic victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
In his 50th Champions League start, the Norwegian striker converted a crucial penalty to secure a win for City, surpassing the scoring records of legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the same career milestone.
Haaland’s penalty marked his 55th goal in 50 Champions League starts, a prolific strike rate that neither Messi nor Ronaldo achieved in their first 50 appearances. This goal was also particularly significant as it was Haaland's first-ever goal at the Bernabéu in four career visits.
The striker drew attention not just for the goal, but for his stoic, emotionless celebration. Haaland later explained that the calm walk and smile were a dual reference, a nod to the hero Achilles, depicting a "nothing is happening" demeanor.
A reference to a viral Instagram meme and the Apple TV+ series "Your Friends and Neighbors," featuring Jon Hamm. Haaland joked that he never plans celebrations beforehand to avoid "jinxing" his form with a scoring drought.
Beyond club success, Haaland is gearing up for Norway’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Drawn into Group I, Norway faces a challenging path in June 16: Opening match in Boston against the Playoff winner (Bolivia/Suriname/Iraq), June 22: Facing Senegal in New York/New Jersey and June 26: A massive showdown against Kylian Mbappé and France in Boston, a match already being hailed as the most anticipated clash of the group stages.
