Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged journalists to practice objective and courageous journalism, emphasizing that a strong media is essential for a robust democracy.
He made the remarks as the chief guest during an exchange with the newly elected executive committee at the Thakurgaon Press Club's Anisul Haque Auditorium on Friday (July 3) afternoon.
Fakhrul called on the media to present the truth fearlessly, noting that good work deserves recognition while wrongdoing warrants criticism.
"The courage to call a spade a spade is journalism's greatest strength," he said. He added that the media has a crucial responsibility to highlight politicians' mistakes and hold them accountable.
Acknowledging that politicians are not above criticism, the minister admitted that errors happen while striving to meet public expectations. He expressed concern over the harassment journalists face for publishing the truth.
"The success of a country's democracy largely depends on an independent, responsible, and strong media," Fakhrul said, stressing the need for a safe working environment for the press.
Highlighting the government’s election promises, he noted that activities have already begun for two newly approved upazilas in Thakurgaon. However, he emphasized that infrastructure development must be paired with efficient, honest, and responsible leadership.
The minister urged journalists to evaluate actions rather than individuals, reporting fearlessly on irregularities and corruption. He concluded by congratulating the Thakurgaon Press Club's newly elected committee, expressing hope that their professionalism will further strengthen public trust.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, and General Secretary Poygam Ali attended the event alongside local journalists.
