Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Named BNP’s Presidential Candidate

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has finalized Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its candidate for the country’s 23rd presidential election.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the party’s top leaders on Thursday (August 13). His nomination papers were later submitted to the Election Commission.

The emergency meeting was held at the Secretariat in the morning and was chaired by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Senior and top BNP leaders attended the meeting, where Fakhrul’s nomination was finalized.

According to the Election Commission’s schedule, presidential nomination papers were accepted from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on August 13. The nominations will be scrutinized on August 16, while the deadline for withdrawing candidacies is 4:00 p.m. on August 18.

The presidential election is scheduled to take place on August 20 in the session hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

If more than one candidate remains in the race, members of parliament will vote to elect the president.
