Abul Khair Bhuiyan, the Member of Parliament for the Laxmipur-2 constituency, stated on Saturday that extensive political interference over the past 17 years has brought the country's general education system to a standstill.

Speaking at a view-exchange meeting with secondary school teachers at the Khilbaicha GF Union College Hall, the lawmaker contrasted past educational standards with the current state of affairs.

“When we were in school, the infrastructure was basic—you could literally see the students' feet from the outside—but the quality of education and the merit of the students were much higher,” Bhuiyan observed. “Today, structural infrastructure has improved significantly, but the core quality of learning inside the classroom has declined.”

The MP emphasized that teachers alone should not be blamed for this decline, pointing instead to a fundamentally flawed system. He warned that the future of Bangladesh remains at risk unless the national education curriculum is thoroughly modernized and updated.

Beyond educational reforms, the lawmaker called on the teaching community to lead a social movement against drug abuse and the rise of juvenile gangs. He highlighted that teachers hold a unique position of respect and social acceptance necessary to spearhead such initiatives.

“We must build social resistance against drugs, and teachers must take the lead," Bhuiyan said. "The government simply does not have enough police personnel to guard every neighborhood. Therefore, community-led resistance is the only sustainable way to protect our youth.”

The meeting, which allowed local educators to raise pressing institutional grievances, was chaired by Belayet Hossain Khan, Headmaster of Palerhat Public High School.

The event was attended by prominent local figures and political leaders, including Dhaka New Market Thana BNP Joint Convener Anwar Hossain Tipu, Sadar Upazila (West) BNP President Mahbubur Rahman Khokon, General Secretary Mohiuddin Patwari Bitu, Laxmipur Press Club President AHM Mostakur Rahman, and Sadar Upazila Secondary Teachers Association President Md. Abu Yusuf, among others.
