Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman held his first formal press conference on Saturday following the party’s landslide victory in the parliamentary election.
The briefing began at 3:00 p.m. at the ballroom of the InterContinental Dhaka. At 3:26 p.m., Rahman entered the hall to a standing ovation from party leaders in attendance. Dressed in a black coat, he smiled and waved to journalists before taking his seat on the stage.
He was joined by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, marking Rahman’s first full-scale media briefing since the election.
Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25 after more than 17 years in self-imposed exile in London. Since his return, he has taken part in an interaction session with editors and senior journalists in Banani, where he made remarks and answered questions.
On election day, Rahman also spoke briefly to reporters on two occasions—after casting his vote at Gulshan Model High School and College and while visiting several polling centers across the capital.
However, Saturday’s event marked the first time he formally convened a press conference following the polls.
Also seated on the stage were members of the BNP Standing Committee, including Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Selima Rahman, and Hafizuddin Ahmed.
