BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that a particular group is raising demands to postpone the upcoming national election in an attempt to divert and pressure the government.
Speaking as chief guest at a views-exchange meeting at Danarhat Eidgah field in Begunbari Union of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila on Thursday (October 16), Fakhrul stated, “The people want elections to be held swiftly to save the country and democracy, but some parties are using various tactics to delay it.”
He dismissed the proportional representation (PR) system being discussed by some as irrelevant to the general public, saying, “People don't understand what PR means. Once an election is held and a government is formed, such matters can be discussed in Parliament.”
Referring to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s medical situation, Fakhrul claimed that despite requests to the former government for her treatment abroad, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had coldly remarked that she would “throw Khaleda off the Padma Bridge.” He stressed that BNP does not believe in revenge but wants to win the people's love.
Fakhrul also alleged that no fair election was held under the previous "fascist" regime, and that people could neither vote nor sleep peacefully. “At least now we can sleep,” he remarked, calling on people to vote again for the BNP’s ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol.
The meeting was presided over by Begunbari Union BNP President S.M. Abul Kashem Azad and attended by District BNP President Mirza Foysal Amin, General Secretary Paigam Ali, as well as teachers, students, members of both Muslim and Hindu communities, and local political figures.
