Bangladesh and Chile to Explore Free Trade Agreement

Bangladesh and Chile have agreed in principle to explore a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aimed at boosting economic cooperation. This development occurred during a meeting between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and his Chilean counterpart Francisco Pérez Mackenna in Manila on July 23, 2026. The talks took place on the sidelines of events marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.

The foreign ministers highlighted the significant potential for expanding bilateral trade. Key discussions focused on Bangladesh exporting ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals electrical goods and leather products to the South American nation while importing critical minerals from Chile.

To further deepen ties both nations are actively considering opening resident diplomatic missions in each other's capitals. Additionally Dr. Rahman proposed exchanging business delegations to uncover new investment and trade opportunities. Responding positively to the strengthening relations, the Chilean foreign minister expressed his intention to visit Bangladesh soon.
