A 30-year-old man, Sohel Rana, has given a confessional statement in court admitting to the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl, Ramisa, in the capital's Pallabi area.
In his statement, recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Wednesday (May 20), Sohel confessed to committing the crime while under the influence of Yaba. Following the confession, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to case files, Ramisa, a second-grade student at Popular Model High School, went missing around 9:00 am on Tuesday (May 19). Court documents reveal that Sohel’s wife, Swapna Akhter, lured the child into their flat. Sohel then took the child into the bathroom and assaulted her.
When Ramisa lost consciousness and her family began knocking on the locked door in search of her, Sohel killed and severely mutilated the child in an attempt to conceal the crime. He then fled the scene through a window.
Ramisa's parents and neighbors grew suspicious after spotting her shoes outside the flat. At around 10:00 am, they broke the door down, discovered the child's remains, and immediately contacted the National Emergency Service 999.
Police quickly arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and detained Swapna Akhter. Utilizing tracking technology, law enforcement later arrested Sohel Rana in front of the Fatullah Police Station in Narayanganj district. The accused stated he had no prior enmity with the victim's family.
The victim’s father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, has filed a murder case at the Pallabi Police Station.
On Wednesday afternoon, Pallabi Police Sub-Inspector Ahiduzzaman produced the couple before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka, filing two separate petitions. While Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid recorded Sohel's confession, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque ordered Swapna Akhter to be sent to jail pending further proceedings. Neither of the accused was represented by legal counsel during the hearing.
