The government has launched a diplomatic initiative to secure Bangladesh-bound fuel shipments navigating the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating Middle East tensions. Following a request from Dhaka for safe passage, Tehran has asked for specific details regarding the vessels.
On Wednesday (March 25), the Energy Department provided the Iranian Foreign Ministry with data on six ships carrying approximately 500,000 tons of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and 79,000 tons of crude oil.
The shared documentation includes loading dates, cargo capacities, ports of origin, and International Maritime Organization (IMO) identification numbers. According to official sources, five of the vessels are transporting LNG from Qatar, while one is carrying crude oil from Saudi Arabia.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical yet volatile transit point for Bangladesh’s energy imports. Given the current geopolitical instability, officials stated that this coordination with Tehran is essential to prevent disruptions that could threaten national energy security.
