Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Mohammed Shahabuddin offered Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the National Eidgah in Dhaka on Saturday morning, marking a significant and rare joint appearance.
The Prime Minister arrived at the Eidgah ground at 8:21am and received the President upon his arrival at 8:26am. The two leaders exchanged greetings before joining the main congregation at 8:34am.
The prayers were led by Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek, khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. A special munajat was offered, seeking peace, progress, and welfare for Bangladesh and the wider Muslim Ummah.
Thousands of worshippers joined the main Eid congregation at the National Eidgah, including the chief justice, cabinet members, Supreme Court judges, lawmakers, diplomats, and senior civil and military officials.
According to officials, the main pandal has a capacity of around 35,000 people, but an estimated one lakh devotees gathered in and around the Eidgah, filling nearby roads and open spaces.
The event was organized under the supervision of Dhaka South City Corporation, with extensive security measures in place. Law enforcement agencies monitored the area using CCTV cameras and watchtowers, while special medical teams remained on standby. Separate prayer arrangements were also made for women.
After the prayers, the President and Prime Minister exchanged Eid greetings with dignitaries and members of the public.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to greet diplomats, political leaders, academics, and citizens from different walks of life at the state guest house Jamuna. He is also expected to visit the graves of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
This year’s Eid carries added significance, as it marks Tarique Rahman’s first Eid celebration in Bangladesh in over 17 years after returning from London and assuming office following the 13th national election.
Officials described the congregation as historic, noting that it was the first time in decades that both the President and Prime Minister offered Eid prayers together at the National Eidgah. The event concluded in a peaceful and festive atmosphere.
