Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump to the Great Hall of the People on Thursday, signaling a mutual desire to transform 2026 into a "historic, landmark year" for the world’s two largest economies.
Opening the two-day summit with a grand military ceremony, President Xi emphasized that bilateral stability is a global necessity. "We should be partners, not rivals," Xi stated, urging both nations to find a path for major powers to coexist. He noted that despite deep-seated differences, the two countries share vast common interests where the success of one serves as an opportunity for the other.
President Trump, making his first visit to Beijing since 2017, reciprocated the warm tone. Describing the meeting as potentially the "biggest summit ever," Trump expressed his commitment to improving ties, telling Xi, "the relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before."
Trade and Technology at the Forefront
The summit follows a preliminary trade truce reached last October. Central to the discussions is a "Board of Trade" mechanism designed to manage imbalances and avoid the return of aggressive tariffs.
Opening Markets: Trump’s primary objective remains "opening up" China to U.S. industries, specifically pushing for sales of Boeing aircraft, agricultural goods and energy.
Tech Titans in Attendance: High-profile U.S. CEOs, including Elon Musk (Tesla/SpaceX), Jensen Huang (Nvidia) and Tim Cook (Apple), joined the delegation, highlighting the critical role of technology and AI in current negotiations.
Beijing’s Demands: China is expected to lobby for eased restrictions on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking equipment.
Geopolitical Challenges
Beyond commerce, the leaders face a complex security landscape. Trump is seeking Xi’s help to pressure Iran into a peace deal to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Xi has made U.S. arms sales to Taiwan a "red line" issue, as Beijing continues to oppose a pending $11 billion American weapons package for the island.
Despite the heavy agenda, the atmosphere on Thursday was one of diplomatic pageantry. The leaders are scheduled to tour the Temple of Heaven and attend a state banquet before concluding talks on Friday.
