U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the Chinese capital on Wednesday evening for a high-stakes three-day state visit, accompanied by an unprecedented delegation of American technology and business leaders.
The visit, the first by a U.S. president in nine years, comes at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. Trump was greeted at the airport with a lavish ceremony featuring a military honor guard and students waving flags.
The business delegation includes high-profile figures such as Elon Musk (Tesla/SpaceX), Tim Cook (Apple), and Jensen Huang (Nvidia). Huang was notably added to the trip at the last minute, joining the President on Air Force One during a stop in Alaska.
Trump’s primary goal is to urge China to "open up" to American business. In a post on Truth Social, the President stated, "I will be asking President Xi... to 'open up' China so that these brilliant people can work their magic."
Issues on the Table:
Technology & AI: Leaders from Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Micron are seeking to resolve complex regulatory hurdles and semiconductor export controls.
Trade Deficit: The U.S. seeks to increase sales of Boeing aircraft, agricultural products, and energy.
Geopolitics: Talks are expected to cover the ongoing war in Iran, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, and global supply chains for rare earth minerals.
While the two leaders aim to maintain a fragile trade truce struck last year, Trump faces domestic pressure from inflation fueled by the Iran conflict and upcoming midterm elections.
Meanwhile, Beijing is expected to push for the easing of U.S. curbs on advanced chipmaking equipment.
