U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory, escalating tensions with Iran as efforts to reach a peace deal remain stalled.

Speaking at a police academy on Long Island, New York, on Friday, Trump said he could make the declaration “very soon.” He made the comments as Iran continues to refuse to reopen the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran in February. The standoff has raised concerns about global energy supplies and shipping.

Trump said that after what he described as the completion of efforts to defeat Iran, he would consider declaring the strait U.S. territory. He also said that, under the current blockade, ships would not be able to pass through without U.S. approval.

Iran has rejected Trump’s threats. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran would not be intimidated by threats or military pressure. He said Iran would decide when the Strait of Hormuz is opened or closed.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments. Any prolonged disruption could put further pressure on oil prices, shipping costs and the global economy.
