Vote counting is underway in five Indian states, including West Bengal, following recent assembly elections. The process began at 8:00 am local time on Monday (May 4).
In Tamil Nadu, early trends show a major lead for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay. As of 11:30 am, TVK is ahead in 104 seats.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is leading in 50 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance is ahead in 77 seats.
Although early indications suggested a close contest between DMK and TVK, the gap widened as counting progressed.
Pre-election exit polls had mostly predicted a win for the DMK. However, some surveys, including the JVC exit poll, indicated a possible advantage for alliances linked to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Vijay’s party.
In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 175 seats, while the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is ahead in 115 seats, based on early trends.
In Assam, the BJP-led alliance is leading in 93 seats, compared to 25 seats for the Congress alliance.
These figures are based on early counting trends and may change as the process continues.
