Vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly elections in India began at 8:00 am local time on Monday (May 4). Early trends show the BJP leading in 162 seats, while the Trinamool Congress is ahead in 115.
A party needs at least 148 seats to form the government in the 294-member assembly.
Voting took place in two phases on April 23 and 29. The Election Commission canceled polling in one constituency due to irregularities, so counting is underway in 293 seats.
Counting is being conducted at 77 centres across 23 districts, including Kolkata.
The BJP has expanded its presence in West Bengal since 2016 and appears to be strengthening its position. Meanwhile, the Left-Congress alliance continues to lose ground.
The results will determine whether Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee retains power or if the BJP, led nationally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, secures a breakthrough in the state. Security has been tightened to prevent any unrest during the counting process.
