US President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address on Thursday, repeating baseless allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election while introducing new claims of Chinese interference.
Speaking from the White House, Trump alleged that China illicitly acquired 220 million US voter files in what he called the "largest compromise of election data in history". He also claimed that more than 250,000 non-citizens are registered to vote across four states. However, multiple court rulings, recounts, and the Justice Department have consistently disproved his claims of a rigged election.
During the speech, Trump aggressively targeted major broadcasters, specifically naming ABC and NBC. He demanded their broadcasting licenses be revoked for refusing to air his address live, baselessly accusing the networks of participating in an election-rigging plot.
Critics and Democratic leaders argue the address is a calculated move to influence the upcoming November midterm elections, amid Republican concerns that Trump's unpopularity could cost them control of Congress. Concurrently, Trump is urging lawmakers to pass the "SAVE America Act," a package proposing strict voting requirements, including mandatory photo IDs and new limits on mail-in ballots.
Noticeably absent from the president's address were pressing public issues, such as the ongoing Iran war and the economy. Trump's continued refusal to accept his 2020 defeat remains a polarizing issue, especially given his role in inciting the January 6 Capitol riots. Should Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in the midterms, Trump could face an unprecedented third impeachment trial.
