The 300-year-old Central Rath Yatra in Chittagong has transformed into a universal celebration of communal harmony, said State Minister for Land and Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin.
Speaking as the chief guest at the festival's inauguration at the Nandankanan Rath pond on Thursday (July 16), the State Minister stated that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership, Bangladesh will remain a unique example of peaceful coexistence.
Chaired by Tulsidham Mohant Shrimat Devdipananda Puri Maharaj, the event drew thousands of devotees. Chittagong City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain emphasized the nation's non-communal spirit and issued a stern warning against influential groups attempting to illegally occupy the historic chariot pond bank. Adding to the assurance of safety, Chittagong-9 MP Abu Sufian affirmed that the state and the government guarantee security for all citizens, regardless of religion, opinion, or caste.
Indian Assistant High Commissioner Shri Harish Kumar highlighted the spiritual significance of the event, calling it a "festival of universal compassion." During the gathering, the Sanatani community also reiterated their demand to declare the day of Rath Yatra a public holiday.
Following the speeches, guests inaugurated the procession by pulling the traditional chariot ropes. Ignoring heavy rain, thousands of devotees from across the region accompanied multiple chariots from various temples along the city's designated route, chanting hymns. The day-long celebration at Tulsidham also featured religious music, medical camps, and the distribution of Mahaprasad, reflecting the enduring cultural heritage of Chittagong.
