


Eminent agricultural scientist Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam assumed the role of Director General (Routine Responsibilities) of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) on Wednesday, July 15.
The Ministry of Agriculture issued the appointment, which was confirmed by Md. Rashel Rana, BRRI’s Head of Publication and Public Relations. Prior to this role, Dr. Islam served as BRRI's Director of Research (Routine Responsibilities) and Chief Scientific Officer, heading the Soil Science Division.
Joining BRRI as a Scientific Officer in 1998, Dr. Islam has dedicated 28 years to agricultural advancement in Bangladesh. Born in 1971 in Kamarkhand, Sirajganj, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1992. He later completed his Master’s degree (2003) and PhD (2012) in Soil Science at an agricultural university in Gazipur.
Today, Dr. Islam is recognized as one of the leading soil scientists within Bangladesh's National Agricultural Research System (NARS). He has authored over 80 research articles published in renowned national and international journals. His agricultural research has involved extensive collaboration across the United Kingdom, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Singapore, and India.
