Recent U.S. intelligence suggests that China is preparing to deliver a new air defense system to Iran within the next few weeks. A sensational report by CNN, citing three sources familiar with the intelligence, indicates that Beijing may be moving to bolster Tehran's military capabilities despite a fragile ongoing ceasefire.
The timing of the reported shipment is being viewed as highly provocative. The move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing early next month. Furthermore, it contradicts Beijing’s previous claims of acting as a neutral mediator in the conflict.
U.S. intelligence assessments suggest Iran may be using the current lull in fighting to replenish its arsenal with the help of foreign allies. Sources told CNN that China is attempting to mask the origin of the shipment by routing the weapons through a third country.
The sources claim Beijing is specifically preparing to deliver shoulder-mounted anti-air missile systems (MANPADS). These systems pose a significant threat to low-flying aircraft and could complicate any future aerial operations if hostilities resume.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington has dismissed the report as "false" and "sensationalist," maintaining that China has never supplied weapons to any party in the conflict.
The war involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran is currently in a two-week lull. Delegations are presently in Islamabad, Pakistan, negotiating a more permanent solution. However, the situation remains volatile as both sides continue to exchange accusations of ceasefire violations. Analysts remain skeptical about the longevity of the peace, given the stringent conditions attached to the proposed agreement.
