Thai authorities have confirmed that more than 1,000 people, predominantly Chinese nationals, fled from Myanmar's border region into Thailand this week following a military raid on one of the country's largest cyber scam operations, known as KK Park.
The facility, located near the Thai border, is a fortified compound where victims are swindled through online cons. While some occupants are victims of human trafficking, others are voluntary workers hoping to profit from the illicit multi billion-dollar industry.
The influx of 1,049 people including nationals from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, and over a dozen other countries crossed into Thailand's Mae Sot district between Wednesday and Friday. Myanmar's junta confirmed the raid on KK Park, stating they seized Starlink satellite internet devices, usage of which had grown rapidly in these compounds. SpaceX, which operates Starlink, confirmed it disabled over 2,500 devices at Myanmar scam centers this week.
Thai authorities are now screening the arrivals to determine if they are victims of human trafficking or if they should be prosecuted for illegal border crossing.
