A devastating train accident in Northeast India claimed the lives of seven elephants and left another injured early Saturday morning. The collision occurred at approximately 2:17 a.m. when a Delhi-bound train struck a herd crossing the tracks in the Hojai district of Assam.
According to a statement from the Northeast Frontier Railway, the incident took place in an area not designated as an official elephant corridor. While the locomotive pilot reportedly applied emergency brakes upon sighting the herd, the impact was unavoidable as the elephants moved toward the tracks.
The collision was severe enough to derail the locomotive and five coaches; fortunately, no human injuries or fatalities were reported. Railway authorities have diverted scheduled trains to an alternative line while restoration work continues at the site.
