A significant casting shift is reportedly shaking up Bollywood, with superstar Deepika Padukone at the center of the controversy. Reports suggest that demands for shorter working hours and a substantial pay raise have led to her exit from several high-profile projects, including the highly anticipated sequel to Kalki 2898 AD.
According to Indian media outlet Anandabazar, Padukone has implemented a strict eight-hour workday policy. This condition reportedly led to her departure from director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film, Spirit. Sources indicate that disagreement over a requested salary increase further strained negotiations, resulting in Tripti Dimri stepping into the role.
The focus has now shifted to Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD franchise. While Padukone played a pivotal role in the first installment, rumors are swirling that South Indian star Sai Pallavi may replace her in the sequel.
Production Insider: "The decision stemmed from scheduling complications and a perceived 'lack of commitment' to the rigorous filming timeline. Although Padukone had already filmed for approximately 20 days, creative and financial differences reached a breaking point."
The production house has reportedly balked at Padukone's request for a 25% remuneration increase alongside the restricted 7–8 hour daily shifts. While the makers have yet to release an official statement, fans are speculating on two possibilities:
The Recast: Sai Pallavi takes over Padukone’s existing character.
The Rewrite: Padukone’s character is written out (potentially killed off), and Sai Pallavi enters the franchise in an entirely new role.
While Alia Bhatt was briefly mentioned in casting rumors, Sai Pallavi remains the frontrunner to join the epic sci-fi saga.
