The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and the Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE) at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have inaugurated the joint IDCOL–DChE, BUET Improved Cook Stove (ICS) Laboratory on October 27, 2025.
This new facility, located at the BUET campus, is designed to significantly boost clean cooking innovation in Bangladesh. Its primary function will be to test and certify cookstoves for particulate and gaseous emissions, energy efficiency, safety, and durability, adhering to the internationally recognised ISO 19867-1:2018 standards.
The collaboration aims to create a globally recognised testing and certification centre. Once ISO-certified, the lab will enable carbon credit registration for clean cooking projects, unlocking new avenues for climate finance in Bangladesh.
This marks a major step in IDCOL's Improved Cook Stove (ICS) Programme, which has already distributed over four million improved cookstoves nationwide since 2013 to reduce indoor air pollution and carbon emissions.
IDCOL's Executive Director and CEO, Alamgir Morshed, called the lab a "pivotal step towards providing cleaner, safer, and more efficient cooking solutions." Professor Shoeb Ahmed of BUET emphasized that the facility will also "foster research and skills development in clean energy technologies."
