Nine human skeletons were stolen from the Tekibari Chanpur Central Cemetery in Kaliakoir, Gazipur, late Wednesday night. Local police have visited the scene and launched a formal investigation into the unsettling crime.

The theft was discovered on Thursday morning, July 16, when passers-by noticed freshly excavated soil and displaced bamboo near several graves. Upon entering the fenced cemetery, which houses approximately 50 graves, locals found nine resting places dug up and emptied.

According to local resident Abdul Hakim, the area was undisturbed when he passed by at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday. He noted that the secluded nature of the road late at night likely provided cover for the perpetrators.

Sutrapur Union Parishad Chairman Md. Solaiman Hossain Mintu expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it "sad and worrying." He assured the community that he is coordinating with law enforcement to track down those responsible.

Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident. "We are investigating this matter seriously, and legal proceedings are currently underway to identify and apprehend the culprits," he stated.

Skeleton theft from rural graveyards occasionally occurs to supply illicit underground medical or anatomical trades, raising severe security concerns among local communities. Authorities are urging local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious nighttime activities.
