Cox’s Bazar is witnessing heightened activity and extensive preparations ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s scheduled one-day visit on June 13. Roads, public spaces and key locations across the district have been decorated with arches, banners and festoons, creating a festive atmosphere among residents.
The visit has generated significant public interest, with discussions focusing on local development priorities, economic prospects and infrastructure needs. Residents, community leaders and social media users have been highlighting issues related to tourism, agriculture, healthcare, transportation and the Rohingya crisis.
One of the key events on the Prime Minister’s itinerary is the inauguration of the re-excavation work of the Patli-Mashuakhali Canal in PMkhali. Local residents believe the project will help improve irrigation, fisheries production and water management in surrounding areas.
The Prime Minister is also expected to inaugurate the newly established Pekua Municipality and Matamuhuri Upazila Parishad, participate in a tree-planting program at Dulahazara Safari Park, visit the grave of July martyr Wasim, inspect the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf Marine Drive and attend public gatherings in Pekua, Chakaria and Cox’s Bazar town.
Residents of PMkhali said the canal once played an important role in supporting agriculture by supplying irrigation water to croplands. Over time, siltation and lack of maintenance reduced its effectiveness. They expressed hope that the re-excavation project would restore its benefits for local farmers and fishermen.
According to officials familiar with the visit schedule, the Prime Minister is expected to arrive at Cox’s Bazar International Airport on the morning of June 13 before traveling to PMkhali. There he will formally inaugurate the canal re-excavation project and address a roadside gathering.
Cox’s Bazar-3 (Sadar-Ramu) constituency lawmaker Lutfar Rahman Kajal said the canal project is aimed at strengthening agriculture, fisheries and the local economy. He noted that the canal has historical significance in the region and expressed optimism that the project would help reduce waterlogging and improve livelihoods.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md. A. Mannan said the district administration has completed coordination meetings and preparations for the visit. He added that all relevant agencies are working together to ensure the successful implementation of the Prime Minister’s program.
Superintendent of Police A.N.M. Sajedur Rahman said additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed across the district. Security measures have also been strengthened at key locations, with intelligence monitoring and vehicle checks being conducted as part of the overall security plan.
The Prime Minister’s visit is being viewed by many residents as an opportunity to highlight development priorities and accelerate ongoing projects in Cox’s Bazar.
