A young man was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near the Balukhali Rohingya camp on Wednesday afternoon, an incident authorities believe is linked to an escalating turf war between rival armed groups.
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Mohammad Kamal, was the younger brother of notorious Rohingya terrorist leader Nabi Hossain.
Witnesses reported that Kamal was returning home by an easy-bike after Zuhr prayers around 2:00 PM. As he reached the area near Friendship Hospital in Balukhali Camp 8, a group of armed miscreants ambushed the vehicle. The attackers fired multiple rounds into Kamal’s chest and head from close range before fleeing the scene.
Locals rescued the seriously injured Kamal and rushed him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead. Nayek Saiful Islam, in-charge of the hospital’s police outpost, confirmed the body has been sent for an autopsy.
Riaz Uddin Ahmed, Commander of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN), stated that the killing appears to be a result of internal conflicts and an ongoing struggle for dominance within the camps.
"We suspect this was a targeted hit following previous disputes between armed factions," the Commander said. He added that a special operation is currently underway to identify and arrest the killers.
The murder has sparked panic among both the Rohingya refugees and the local host community. Additional police units have been deployed to the camps to prevent further retaliatory violence between active armed groups. Law enforcement remains on high alert as the situation remains tense.
