The Pakistan Navy (PN) successfully executed a high-stakes humanitarian mission on Friday, rescuing 18 crew members from the merchant vessel MV Gold Autumn.
The operation took place in the North Arabian Sea, approximately 200 nautical miles (370 km) off the coast of Pakistan, following an urgent distress call from the ship.
Upon receiving the emergency alert, the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) activated its Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) to initiate rescue protocols. The PNS Hunain, which was patrolling nearby, was immediately diverted to provide life-saving assistance.
The rescue team faced a complex situation involving a fire on board and structural damage to the vessel. The Navy’s specialist teams provided immediate healthcare for exhausted and injured sailors. Technical assistance to contain the blaze on the merchant ship. A professional evaluation of the vessel’s stability.
All 18 crew members were successfully transferred from the MV Gold Autumn to the PNS Hunain. The rescued sailors represent a diverse group of nationalities, including citizens from China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia.
The evacuated crew has been transported to Karachi, where they are receiving further medical attention. Authorities have confirmed that coordination is underway for their subsequent repatriation to their respective home countries.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the Pakistan Navy for its professionalism and swift action.
In an official statement from the PMO, he commended the officers and personnel of the PNS Hunain for their "humanitarian spirit," noting that the Navy continues to serve as a reliable first responder for maritime crises in the region.
