Banned 'China Duari' (ring nets) seized during a mobile court operation in the Chhota Jamuna River were burned and destroyed in Phulbari, Dinajpur, on Wednesday (February 25) afternoon.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ahmed Hasan led the destruction of the nets on the upazila premises. The nets were originally seized during a drive on Tuesday evening in the Hazir More area of Shibnagar Union. While the illegal fishers fled the scene, the mobile court, assisted by Upazila Fisheries Officer Rasheda Akhter, recovered three nets stretching 50 meters with an estimated market value of 60,000 TK.
Fisheries Officer Rasheda Akhter explained that these operations are part of a regular effort to enforce the Fisheries Conservation Act. She warned that as river water levels drop, native fish species become increasingly vulnerable to extinction. Unscrupulous fishers using banned "current nets" and "China Duari" not only deplete fish stocks but also destroy beneficial aquatic insects and animals.
UNO Ahmed Hasan reiterated the administration's firm stance, stating that strict legal action will be taken against anyone caught using banned nets to protect the local ecosystem. Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Sarwar Hasan and other officials were also present during the destruction.
