Women-led organization 'Nandita Suraksha' has partnered with the District Women’s Affairs Department and District Police to tackle the rising tide of cyberbullying and online harassment against women in Faridpur.
During an advocacy meeting held at a city restaurant on Wednesday afternoon, participants called for the immediate identification and closure of Facebook groups used to denigrate women. The meeting, titled "Ending Online Harassment Against Women in Faridpur," was organized by Nandita Suraksha with support from The Asia Foundation and FCDO.
Tahiatul Jannat Remi, Executive Director of Nandita Suraksha, highlighted that several local Facebook groups regularly host defamatory content and "ugly" comments targeting women. "This propaganda is severely damaging the mental health and social standing of women in our community," she stated, urging the administration to take swift action.
Addressing the session as Chief Guest, Additional Superintendent of Police Fatema Islam assured that law enforcement views cybercrime with the utmost seriousness. "We will take immediate action upon receiving any complaint regarding online harassment," she affirmed.
Masuda Hossain, Deputy Director of the Department of Women’s Affairs, noted that grassroots initiatives are vital for a "cyber violence-free" Faridpur. The meeting concluded with a commitment to a coordinated response involving police, civil society, and legal aid to ensure a safer digital environment.
