Police in Faridpur have arrested five alleged drug dealers and seized 10,100 yaba pills in a raid by the District Detective Branch (DB). The recovered drugs are estimated to be worth about Tk 3 million, police said.

The operation was carried out on Friday at the Usha Bhaban housing estate in the Raghunandpur area of Faridpur city and nearby locations. The arrests followed strict instructions issued earlier the same day at a law and order meeting by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid and Faridpur-4 MP Shahidul Islam Babul to intensify action against drugs.

According to a press release issued by the district police on Saturday (February 21), the raid was led by DB (Bhanga Zone) Officer-in-Charge P.M. Mamunur Rashid, acting on secret information. Three suspects were initially caught red-handed with yaba pills from in front of and inside a building. Based on their statements, two more accomplices were later arrested.

The arrested men are Ashiqur Rahman Rahat (25), Sumon Mridha (32), Mirajul Islam (29), Ruman Molla (29) and Mohammad Solaiman Mridha (26). All are residents of different villages under Faridpur Sadar Kotwali Police Station.

Police said 4,000 yaba pills in 20 packets were recovered from Rahat, 2,800 pills in 14 packets from Sumon Mridha, and 3,200 pills in 16 packets from Mirajul Islam. An additional 100 pills were found in loose form, bringing the total seizure to 10,100 pills.

OC Mamunur Rashid said the group had been operating a yaba trade in the area for a long time. “A case is being prepared against them under the Narcotics Control Act,” he added.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md. Shamsul Azam said police maintain a zero-tolerance policy against drugs in the district and that such drives will continue. Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam also said regular raids are being conducted to keep the district drug-free and urged public awareness.

Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether the suspects are linked to a larger drug supply network.
