A moderate cold wave is sweeping across Bangladesh, with the northern district of Naogaon recording a season-low temperature of 6.7°C (44°F) in Badalgachi on Wednesday morning.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reports that the cold wave is currently impacting four divisions—Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, and Barishal—along with 12 additional districts, including Tangail, Faridpur, and Cumilla.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque stated that the intense chill is expected to last for at least two more days. While a slight temperature increase early next week may provide minor relief, cold conditions are forecast to persist throughout January.
Thick fog continues to disrupt daily life, particularly in western districts. While the sun broke through in eastern regions on Wednesday morning, the BMD warns that moderate to thick fog will linger across the country through Friday, especially near river basins. This dense cover has narrowed the gap between daytime highs and nighttime lows, making the weather feel significantly colder than the recorded figures.
Historically, January is Bangladesh's coldest month. Recent records include a record-low 2.6°C in Tetulia (2018) and 3°C in Saidpur (2013). Currently, the capital, Dhaka, is seeing lows of 11.9°C, while Teknaf remains the warmest point at 26.5°C.
