A fine of Tk 1 lakh has been collected for illegally extracting sand from the river protection dam in Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj. The fine was imposed by a mobile court during a drive in the Meghai Ghat area of the upazila on Friday (January 2) evening.
Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Naima Jahan Sumaiya said that a dredger and a bulkhead were seized during the drive and 5 workers were arrested during this time. Later, a fine of Tk 1 lakh was collected from them through a mobile court. The fined persons are Md. Salauddin (40), Shukur Ali (42), Yasin (22), Liaqat Ali Khan (50) and Khalil Mollah (45).
Later, the seized dredger and bulkhead were returned if the involved parties gave a bond not to engage in such activities in the future. Representatives of the Naval Police, Thana Police and Water Development Board were present in the operation.
