In order to maintain the smooth operation of Chattogram port, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has imposed a ban on all forms of processions, meetings, human chains, and road rallies within the port vicinity for a duration of one month.
This decision was made public through a notice signed by CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz on Tuesday, November 11.
According to the notice, Chattogram port serves as the backbone of the nation's economy and is classified as a critical key infrastructure (KPI). Each day, approximately five to six thousand trucks, covered vans, long vehicles, and prime movers access the port. Given this significant volume of traffic, it is crucial to keep the roads surrounding the port operational.
However, the processions, meetings, and human chains organized by various political, labor, or social groups in the port area lead to traffic congestion and hinder import-export operations, which can severely impact the national economy and potentially threaten national security, as stated in the notice.
The notification further indicated that under the authority granted by Section 30 of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Ordinance 1978, all forms of processions, meetings, gatherings, human chains, and road meetings will be banned in the port area, including locations such as Barrack Building intersection, Nimtala intersection, Jetty Gate No. 3, Customs intersection, Saltgola crossing, etc., from November 12 to December 11.
Sources from the CMP have indicated that this measure has been implemented to ensure order and security in the port area. It was also noted that legal action will be pursued against any violations of this ban.
