FIFA has sparked global outrage by suspending U.S. striker Folarin Balogun's one-match red-card ban to making him eligible for Monday's World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
The decision followed a personal phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino urging a review of the case. Balogun was sent off during the USA’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review caught him stamping on defender Tarik Muharemovic.
While U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino maintained the punishment was harsh, an automatic one-match ban is standard under FIFA regulations. Instead, FIFA applied Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code, suspending the ban for a one-year probationary period without officially rescinding the red card.
The unprecedented political intervention has severely compromised the tournament's integrity. The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed deep astonishment and filed an official appeal, stating the ruling directly violates competition guidelines.
Football governing bodies and figures have strongly condemned the move:
UEFA: Stated FIFA "crossed a red line," describing the decision as incomprehensible and unjustifiable.
German Football Association: Demanded immediate clarification, warning that FIFA’s credibility is at stake.
Thomas Tuchel & Juergen Klopp: Criticized the lack of consistency and slammed the political interference, with Klopp calling the backroom agreement "madness."
While Trump celebrated the decision on Truth Social as a victory against "a great injustice" football authorities warn it sets a dangerous precedent that weaponizes sport for political purposes.
