The decision followed a personal phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino urging a review of the case. Balogun was sent off during the USA’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review caught him stamping on defender Tarik Muharemovic.
While U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino maintained the punishment was harsh, an automatic one-match ban is standard under FIFA regulations. Instead, FIFA applied Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code, suspending the ban for a one-year probationary period without officially rescinding the red card.
