President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on local entrepreneurs and expatriates to boost investments in Sylhet’s promising tourism, tea, fisheries and industrial sectors.
Speaking at a civic reception hosted by the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) on Tuesday the President highlighted the region's vast natural resources. “The hills, rivers, tea gardens and haors make Sylhet a major tourism hub. Expatriates and capable investors must come forward to unlock this potential” he said.
Emphasizing the global reputation of Sylhet's tea, the President noted that Pakistan plans to import tea from the region following his recent discussions with the Pakistani High Commissioner. He also pointed out the immense prospects for fish farming in local haors and the opportunity to utilize regional minerals for large-scale industries.
Beyond economic development, President Fakhrul underscored the critical need for political stability. Noting that a democratic environment has returned to Bangladesh after years of sacrifice, he urged both ruling and opposition parties to sustain the system and ensure an effective Parliament through dialogue.
“Protecting democracy is now our biggest responsibility” he stated. “Our challenge is to rebuild the country, strengthen democratic institutions and create a livable Bangladesh for future generations.”
The President also praised the nation’s long-standing communal harmony, calling the peaceful coexistence of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians the country's "greatest beauty."
The event chaired by SCC Administrator Abdul Quiyum Choudhury, was attended by the President’s spouse, Rahat Ara Begum, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Expatriates' Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury and Whip Md GK Gaus, among other dignitaries.
