Chattogram Range Police arrested 587 people in a 24-hour special operation targeting drugs and other criminal cases, including 213 arrests in anti-drug drives.
The operation was conducted from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, September 16, according to information released by the Chattogram Range Police headquarters.
Of the 213 people arrested in anti-drug operations, 147 were detained in drug cases, including two alleged drug carriers and 145 alleged drug users. Another 66 alleged drug dealers were arrested in regular and other cases, said Chattogram Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdul Quddus Chowdhury.
Police also filed 51 drug-related cases during the operation.
The authorities said mobile courts sentenced 64 people to different terms of imprisonment during the drive. Fines totaling Tk 32,200 were also imposed.
Police reported recovering 3,262 yaba tablets, 301 litres of locally produced liquor, 58 kilograms and 492 grams of cannabis, 156 bottles of foreign liquor, 30 cans of beer, 45 bottles of syrup and 13 tapentadol tablets.
In addition to the anti-drug arrests, police detained 374 people in regular and other cases. These included 120 people in regular cases, 73 in previous cases, 45 under Section 34 of the Police Act, five under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 36 under Section 151 and other laws, 140 under arrest warrants and 21 under warrants related to sentences.
Chattogram Range Police said the special anti-drug campaign would continue in the public interest.
