Eight individuals acquitted in the high-profile Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case were released from Gazipur’s Kashimpur prisons on Tuesday afternoon.

The release included seven men from the High-Security Central Jail and one woman, Kamrunnahar Moni from the Women's Central Jail. Moni was accompanied by her seven-year-old daughter Mobashera who was born and raised entirely behind bars.

Arrested in 2019 while seven months pregnant, Moni stepped out into freedom and shared the emotional reality of raising a child in confinement. Relatives waiting at the gates welcomed them with flower garlands.

“My child was born in prison and spent seven years there. I taught her from second-grade textbooks and helped her read the Quran” Moni told reporters. She described improvising a schoolbag from a cut-up shirt to give her daughter a sense of normalcy. “A child is never truly happy without their mother. I protected her as best as I could.”

Hazera Begum the mother of another acquitted individual, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, expressed immense relief. "My son was framed. I offer endless thanks to Allah for having him back in my arms" she said.

Senior Jail Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that the seven men Md. Shamim, Hafez Abdul Kader, Mohiuddin Shakil, Afsar Uddin, Imran Hossain Mamun, Iftekhar Uddin Rana and Abdur Rahim Sharif were released following the verification of their legal documents.

This release follows their recent acquittal, marking the end of a long legal ordeal for the eight individuals linked to the widely discussed 2019 Sonagazi tragedy.
