

Jahangirnagar University has fined 20 students a total of Tk 615,000 over two separate ragging incidents involving students from the Physics and History departments.
The students will not be allowed to sit for any ongoing or scheduled examinations until they pay their respective fines, according to two separate office orders issued by the university.
The orders, signed by Acting Registrar A B M Azizur Rahman on Tuesday (September 15), followed a decision taken at a special Syndicate meeting on September 13.
Physics students fined over July ragging incident
According to the office order, several students from the Physics Department's 2024-25 academic session were accused of ragging juniors from the 2025-26 session between 10pm on July 20 and 3am the following day. The incident reportedly occurred in the Monpura area near Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Haque Hall.
The allegations included verbal abuse and humiliating treatment of junior students, including forcing them to perform sit-ups while holding their ears.
Eight Physics students were fined between Tk 35,000 and Tk 50,000, with their combined penalties amounting to Tk 365,000.
Mohammad Zahid Hasan, Mohammad Fazle Hasan Fahad and Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul were each fined Tk 50,000. Mohammad Mahmudul Amin Siam, Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman Mizu and Mohammad Faisal Ahmed were each fined Tk 45,000. Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib was fined Tk 40,000, while Mohammad Al-Amin Hossain was fined Tk 35,000.
History students penalised in separate case
In another incident, several students from the History Department's 2024-25 session were accused of ragging 13 students from the following academic session. The incident allegedly took place at the university's school and college field between 11pm and 2am on July 3.
The allegations included verbally abusing junior students and forcing them to remain holding their ears. The complaint stated that the ragging was carried out under the pretext of teaching the juniors “proper behaviour.”
Twelve History students were fined a combined Tk 250,000.
Mohammad Abu Abtahi Anik was fined Tk 30,000, while Nasim Uddin Majumder, Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman Anto, Abdullah Mahdi, Shubhashish Ray Pranto, Mohammad Raihan Khan, Mohammad Naimul Hasan, Mohammad Ishfaq Hadi, Naim Ahmed Sajib, Kartik Chandra Ray, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil and Saifullah Mansur Anan were each fined Tk 20,000.
The university said the disciplinary measures were imposed under Section 3(2)(d) of the Jahangirnagar University Student Discipline Ordinance, 2018.
Under the decisions, the students will remain barred from ongoing examinations, term finals and other scheduled tests until they pay their fines.
The university also warned that more severe disciplinary action would be taken if any of the students were involved in similar misconduct again.
