World Ozone Day was observed in Paikgachha, Khulna, with an awareness meeting focused on protecting the ozone layer and raising public awareness about environmental challenges.
The environmental organisation Banbibi organised the discussion at its office in New Market area of Paikgachha on Wednesday afternoon, September 16. Journalist and columnist Prakash Ghosh Bidhan, president of the organisation, chaired the meeting.
Advocate Shafiqul Islam Kachi attended the event as the chief guest, while Ashok Kumar Ghosh, president of the New Market Business Cooperative Society, was present as a special guest.
Among those who spoke at the meeting were social worker Pintu Dhar, Linza Akter Mithila, Arpita Sadhu, Dighi, Mim, Afroza, Faudia, Sadia, environmental activist Shahinur Rahman, Ganesh Das and Gazi Alam Hossain.
Speakers said scientific research has shown that the ozone layer is being depleted as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) continue to accumulate in the atmosphere. They attributed the increase in such gases to various human activities.
They also said the accumulation and emission of greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming, which is associated with various natural disasters.
The speakers noted that the ozone layer absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, helping make Earth habitable for living organisms and protecting life from its damaging effects.
They stressed the need for greater public awareness and collective efforts to protect the ozone layer and the environment.
