Liverpool have strongly condemned racist abuse directed at defender Ibrahima Konate following their UEFA Champions League victory over Galatasaray.
The incident occurred after a first-half challenge involving Victor Osimhen during Liverpool’s 4-0 win at Anfield. Osimhen later suffered a fractured forearm and was substituted at half-time, prompting backlash online that escalated into racist abuse targeting Konate.
Liverpool described the abuse as “appalling and disgusting,” stating it was “dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate.” The club reaffirmed its full support for Konate and confirmed it is working with authorities to identify those responsible.
The Premier League also condemned the abuse, stressing that discrimination has no place in football or society. It warned that individuals found guilty could face severe consequences, including bans and legal action.
The incident highlights an ongoing issue in football, with police recently investigating multiple cases of online racial abuse involving Premier League players.
Meanwhile, Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk criticised refereeing decisions during the match, claiming Konate’s challenge was not properly addressed.
Liverpool have urged social media platforms to take stronger action, arguing they have the tools and responsibility to prevent such abuse but often fail to act effectively.
On the sporting front, Liverpool advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-1 aggregate win and are set to face Paris Saint-Germain next.
