Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe will undergo further assessments on his left knee but will not have surgery at this stage.

The 27-year-old France international has been struggling with an injury to the external ligament of his left knee since late 2025. He missed last week’s Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica and has travelled to Paris for additional tests.

Mbappe will miss Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Getafe on Monday. His availability for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Manchester City next week remains uncertain.

A statement from Mbappe’s representatives confirmed he is in Paris with Real Madrid’s medical staff. “In agreement with the club, he is undergoing further tests on his knee with the aim of optimising follow-up care and preparing for his comeback. No surgical intervention is being planned at the moment,” the statement said.

Coach Alvaro Arbeloa explained that the decision for Mbappe to take time for full recovery was mutual. “It was a bit of a consensus between everyone. We think the best thing is for him to stop, recover, and come back at 100%,” Arbeloa said. “It’s not going to be a question of days, it will take a bit longer, but hopefully not too long.”

Mbappe has scored 38 goals in 33 appearances this season, and Real Madrid is prioritising his long-term fitness.
